"I thought today would be simpler than it was."
Our expectation is often met with adversity. What we want and what we get can be very different. On top of that the lens of our perspective can skew things too.
In many ways things like this will not change. We can expect the unexpected. Between the leading of God and the wiles of the devil we know anything can happen. How can we stay sane through it all?
The one constant in life is God himself. Jesus is the same yesterday, today, and forever. There is no shadow of turning with Him. In the same token God's attributes will not change. His goodness will always be good, His love will always be perfect, His faithfulness will always be true.
So while we go through life we know that no matter what happens it will be alright. Whether our expectations are met or not God is in control and He is working on our behalf for our good.
