2 Decades of Good Times

"What a crazy ride it has been!"

In these words I sum up twenty years of my Christina walk. I never dreamt that God would take me around the world preaching the gospel when I said yes to Jesus. I never dreamt that God would have me pioneer ministries, teach in a Bible College or pastor at one of the greatest churches on the planet (which I believe is the greatest but I am a little biased). I never dreamt that God would bless me to have the family that I do. I look at my wife and children in amazement.

All of this is not to brag. All the praise goes to God. I couldn't have done any of this by myself. At best I would have been playing guitar in a coffee shop somewhere hoping someone would like my version of an old song and they would give me a tip with paper money rather than coins. How miserable.

Every morning I wake up with the words 'thank you' on my lips. I think God smiles when we say thanks. He knows He is good but loves a grateful heart. The words 'be thankful' occur on several occasions in the New Testament. I guess we have to be reminded. If you look around you will see the hand of God on your life.

I could tell stories of how I should be dead. How people on my street pulled guns on me and my friends while we were playing basketball. I could talk about car accidents that never happened and I don't know how they were avoided. To be honest there was one time in San Timoteo canyon I closed my eyes when a truck crossed over the double yellow lines on to my side of the road and when I opened them again I was just fine. Or when I rolled my car in Reche Canyon and told God on the way over "Here I come!" (That accident did happen but I was fine. Maybe I should stay away from the canyons?!)

As I look forward to the next twenty years I wonder at what God will do. What victories are in store and what tragedies will be avoided or withstood with grace and joy? No matter what comes good or bad I do know that two words will be on my lips; "Thank you!"

What has God done in your life since you said yes to Jesus? How grateful are you?

Day 95 - The Mind of a Child

"We finished our time at the petting zoo. I used to go there as a kid and I guess I didn't realize how plain it is there. It seems in my mind I had built it up to be exotic with a wide variety of animals. The variety was in sheep and goats. To their credit they also had a variety of chickens and some llamas and alpacas."

There is a running joke in the movie "Indian Summer" where one of the campers at a summer camp returns and continually is amazed at how different things look now that he is an adult. He loudly remarks at the different places around the camp that he remembers it being so much bigger. By the end of the movie the other campers who returned with him are all up to their ears with his comments and yell back at him that they know and he can stop with the comments.

Life has a way of changing our perspective as we get older. This can be good and bad. Good in the sense that we realize what is important, valuable, right and true. Often our perspective on what we fear changes. But it is also bad in the sense that we lose some of the wonder of life. We can miss moments and let stress, pressures and new adult fears keep us from childlike faith. Risk, bravery, art, laughter and a slew of other wonderful things become calculated or die as we age.

As I look back on last year's thought I think I need to lighten up. I didn't include my sarcastic remarks about the cost of the entrance to the petting zoo because although they were humorous they aren't worth repeating. What is it worth when my children remember that daddy took them to see the animals? What cost can you place on holding their hands and seeing them feed a chicken or a llama from their hand for the first time?

When we step into smaller shoes and look through the lens of a child the world becomes a fascinating and wonderful place. Partner that with the blessings of age and wisdom and you will have a brilliant life.

What do you remember from childhood as wonderful or fantastic? How can we become more childlike without being childish?

Day 70 - Inexperience

"I was reading tonight that David was 30 when he began to reign. It is a scary thought for him and Josiah because of their age when they became king. I couldn't imagine the pressures that were on both of them."

Inexperience is as bad as ignorance in most cases. It is one thing to know everything about driving a car and quite another to drive one. The good thing is that inexperience can be remedied. Just as learning cures ignorance so does doing cure inexperience.

It can be scary to venture out and try new things. Especially when the trial and error could possibly hurt and organization or an individual.

In my own case I became a pastor at age 24. I became an executive pastor at age 30. I made a lot of mistakes early on (still do from time to time). Thankfully the Lord is gracious and patient with us while we learn. Thank God for the Holy Spirit and for people with lots of experience who mentored me and spoke words of encouragement as well as correction to me.

I love that Paul told Timothy not to let people despise his youth. God is not so concerned with age and experience as He is the heart and the will to do. Don't let age (young or old) or experience (too little or too much) stop you from doing. What you are called to do.

Have you been letting age or experience be a road block to your calling? How can we overcome the pressures that keep us from new experiences?
